Pro-Quest’s History VaultHistory Vault is a database of archival materials specifically about the civil rights movement and US foreign policy during the Vietnam War era. This is helpful to me because of the archival materials that focuses on African American history.Advantages: It is organized into modules. Advanced search options. Excellent collection of archives. Limitations: Federal documents are scanned and not digitally scribed which can be hard to read the originals.Database
Hathi TrustDigital library of cultural records that provides access to public domain and some copyright content. As a distance learner this allows me access to college eBooks for free.Great for Colonial America secondary sources. Access to e-books and other digitized documents. Limitations: I would appreciate usage or citation information like Google Scholar.Database
Project Muse Project MUSE collaborates with libraries, publishers, and scholars across the world to provide access to journals and books. I use this database for scholarly journals.Advantages: users can create their own library to save items. It can be accessed on mobile devices. Limitations: most academic journals require credentials or purchase to access materials.Database
Digital Public Library of AmericaDPLA provides access to multiple libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions across the United States. I use this site for primary documents.Advantages: you can search over 43 million items, access to eBooks, curated online exhibits from college professors, primary source sets. Limitations: DPLA does not offer universal reference services like a public library. There is no access to physical copies of books or other documents.Database
The William and Mary QuarterlyThe leader in early American history and one of the oldest scholarly journals in the country. They publish articles and peer review books and stay abreast in Early American history spanning from 15th century to 18th century. Our very own Dr. Heather Kopelson serves on the editorial board. Advantages: digitized journal to the 1890s. Great for histography. The journal is published by the Omohundro Institute and their website also offers events, publications, fellowships, and digital projects. Limitations: The website is for professionals, historians, college students to PhD students. It is not for general audiences.Journal
New York History Includes case studies, exhibits, book reviews, and historical research on New York state.  I will have access to scholarly articles from the last hundred years.Advantages: online access to digitized library. Easy to search topics using UA library services and articles available by pdf. Limitations: be familiar how to search for articles by topics.Journal
New York Historical SocietyNYHS has on-site and online collections and documents. They offer educational programs, blogs, podcasts, and videos.Advantages: Includes gender studies in the section called Women & the American Story (WAMS). Limitations: website’s interface has too much information on it.  Jumping-off site
All Sides-Unbiased/Balanced NewsAllows users to compare news stories across the political spectrum. Great for teaching bias and fake news.Advantages: rates articles on a scale from Left, Center, and Right. Easy to use and understand. Limitations: only the day’s top stories, you cannot search previous articles.Jumping-Off Site
The ClioGuides to thousands of historical sites, monuments, museums, etc. across the country. This site is useful to me and my students in Texas learn about the places in New York.Advantages: access sites across the country. Use the “time capsule” feature to learn more. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American HistoryOne of the best archives of American history and dedicated to K-12 history education. I use GLI for their archival materials and teacher resources.Advantages: great programs and events that are free to educators. Limitations: it is subscription-based.Content
Eastville Community Historical SocietyTells the multi-ethnic story of the Eastville community in Sag Harbor, NY. I will be interning for ECHS this summer to create 8-12 curriculum.Advantages: simple interface and layout. Easy to navigate. Limitations: items seem to have been updated since 2019. No educator tab.Content
American Yawp- Collaborative US History TextbookFree, open American history textbook for college-level history courses published by Stanford University Press. I use this as one of myAdvantages: for scholars, by scholars. No profit motive. Limitations: no search function, no interactive tools such as highlighter or notes.Content
Digital Culture of Metropolitan New YorkDigitized collections from the libraries, museums, and cultural sites in the NYC area. This site allowed me access to maritime collections.Advantage: easy to use and search. Limitations: it is not a curated collection.Content
New York Public Library- Digital ProjectsPart of the New York city public library system. Great collection of materials I can share with my students and build my knowledge of the area.Advantages: wonderful collection of archived materials. Limitations: no search feature.Content
New York State LibraryNYSL is a research library, offers audio books/magazines and braille printed materials, and works in partnership with 73 library systems across the state. I like to use the online resources including the ask a librarian feature.Advantages: excellent help page and easy to navigate and search millions of items. Open to non-New York citizens. Limitations: advanced research library system that students may need additional assistance to navigate.Database/ Content
Long Island History ProjectBi-monthly podcast about the history of Long Island started in 2014 and continues today. I was able to learn about the area before my internship.Advantages: although it is listed like a blog it is searchable. Creators also include images and additional resources. Limitations: very plain looking.Content
Sag Harbor Whaling MuseumMuseum’s website that promotes the culture of Sag Harbor and whaling history. I was able to learn a little bit about Sag Harbor before my arrival.Advantage: Due to covid they offer a virtual museum visit. Limitations: only a few items online. Missing kid’s corner.Content
Sylvester Manor- Educational FarmHistorical site built in 1651 that preserves and shares the history of Shelter Island. I was able to gather information about one of the sites I will visit.Advantages: website is well-maintained, updated, and easy to navigate. Addressed racial and historic racism concerns following the death of George Floyd. Limitations: you must visit in person to access archival materials.Content
VokiCreate customizable speaking avatars. Great for presentations when students are nervous to present themselves.  Advantages: teachers and students can present as an avatar. Use lessons made by other teachers. Limitations: Basic level is free but there is a cost to upgrade.Assistive Technology
RewordifyFree, online software that lowers the texts Lexile score making it easier for students to read, understand, and build vocabulary. My struggling readers use it to better understand difficult APUSH texts.Advantages: significantly lowers the Lexile score by simplifying the words. Limitations: maximum word count on the free account is 10,000.Assistive Technology
